Lionel Messi got a bitter taste of being popular when his Ibiza mansion was broken into and vandalized by the climate activist group Futuro Vegetal. Two members of the group sneaked into the back of the Argentina captain’s property and left after throwing red and white paint over it.
The damage to the property was highlighted with a banner that read, “Help the Planet – Eat the Rich – Abolish the Police.” Futuro Vegetal stated, “The richest 1% of the world’s population generated the same amount of carbon emissions in 2019 as the poorest two-thirds of humanity, despite the fact that it is precisely the most vulnerable communities that suffer the worst consequences of the crisis.”
Messi is said to be worth $600 million, according to Forbes. He bought his stunning mansion on the island for 11 million euros, which the eco-activists claim is an illegal construction. Apparently, Messi did not have the certificate of completion of work that is to be granted by the San José City Council.
On the social networks of Futuro Vegetal, they point out that “the institutions are at the service of a small ruling class and do not represent the popular will.”
The Inter Miami star regularly visits his home with his wife and three kids. This incident will certainly be an eye-opener for him, if not for climate change, then at least to take security matters more seriously. Futuro Vegetal is notoriously famous for damaging the property of the ultra-rich.
They vandalized Walmart billionaire heiress Nancy Walton’s $300 million superyacht Kaos not once but twice, using biodegradable paint to make their point. While the focus of the eco-activists was on the 37-year-old player’s Ibiza mansion, there is no doubt his carbon footprint is noteworthy.
Messi took 52 private jet trips in just three months at the beginning of 2022. This resulted in more CO2 emissions than an average person would generate in 150 years. We hope they dont shift focus to his jets now.
