When Jennifer Lopez sang “Love Don’t Cost a Thing,” she might not have been aware of Taylor Swift and her romantic interest, Travis Kelce. In 2023, the celebrity recognized as the biggest CO2 polluter of 2022 demonstrated the worthiness of the title. The 34-year-old superstar singer, deeply in love, goes to great lengths—pun intended—to visit the Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end. According to Unilad, in just the past three months, the “Lover” singer has made 12 trips to see her beloved, consuming 12,622 gallons of jet fuel (costing nearly $80,000) and generating 138 tons of CO2 emissions.
This figure could have been significantly lower had she flown in a commercial jet. However, that raises the question of what to do with her two private jets, a Dassault Falcon 7X and a Dassault Falcon 900. Swift, living up to her last name, has been shuttling between New York and Kansas City. She also managed to travel between performances in South America for her ongoing Eras World Tour, as reported by the Daily Mail, to maintain her romance with the NFL star.
To offset this, Taylor Swift could plant 2,282 trees and allow them to grow for 10 years. According to the Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator, this is equivalent to the annual energy consumption of 17 houses or the electricity usage of 26.9 homes for a year. A representative for Taylor defended the flights, stating, “Before the tour kicked off in March of 2023, Taylor purchased more than double the carbon credits needed to offset all tour travel. The excess credits mean Taylor could have accounted for more than enough to cover her recent romance-related travels, in addition to her planned tour journeys.”
Her private jet, the nearly $60 million Falcon 7X, is designed for long-haul flights, with a range of about 5,950 nautical miles, capable of flying from Paris to Tokyo or New York to Dubai without refueling. Instead, Taylor chose to fly from NYC to Kansas. The $45 million Dassault Falcon 900, seating up to 14 passengers, boasts luxurious suites, a dining area, and a conference room. It’s no surprise that Billboard’s Greatest Pop Star of 2023, Taylor Swift, opted for frequent private flights.
