On the one hand, China is dishing out libraries dwarfing even the Mandalorian with a minimum of a million titles. On the other, Berlin-based digital design studio Ulises simplifies the concept by envisioning urban streetscapes donning inflatable infrastructures that double as public libraries. Ditching frill and fancy elements, Ulises puts the focus on enjoying reading in a series of public places like bus stops, canopies, and benches, made from translucent inflatable PVC and stacked with books.

Using the power of artificial intelligence, these street libraries look incredibly fascinating complete with ample lighting, comfortable seating to read and rest awhile, and making the space a natural extension of the urban fabric while enriching streets with knowledge and a special hobby. Ricardo Orts, founder of studio Ulises conceptualized the idea to promote culture and a sense of community, ‘By designing public spaces that foster a culture of reading, Ulises aims to make literature more accessible to everyone and promote the benefits of reading for personal and social development,’ shared Orts.

Constructed out of inflatable PVC, the lightweight libraries dubbed cultural constellations are easy to transport and install. Thick obstructing walls are replaced with airy translucency allowing plenty of natural light in the interiors. The reading nooks can double up as an effective, engaging gallery for local artists and writers to showcase their work.
