Hunger is the only prayer that does not need words; it is written in the hollows of the cheeks and the stillness of a gaze. Though it cannot be eradicated across the entire world, megadonor MacKenzie Scott is surely doing her bit to help millions. The philanthropist has donated $70 million to Meals on Wheels, continuing her pattern of large-scale giving. The gift will help address what has been described as a national epidemic, affecting nearly 14 million seniors who worry about having enough food. Of these, more than 7 million seniors, or 56%, report feeling lonely, something that negatively affects their health and well-being.

Recognizing the organization’s efforts, the fairy godmother of generosity, with a flick of her unrestricted wand, bestowed an extraordinary $70 million on Meals on Wheels America, the national leadership body for roughly 5,000 local providers. The windfall will be instrumental in strengthening this network through better technology, facilities, kitchens, transportation, shared resources, and other infrastructure that local chapters often struggle to fund. It is believed that 98% of providers report infrastructure needs within the next three years.

Clearly, the gift could not have come at a better time, with one in three local Meals on Wheels providers facing a waitlist and seniors waiting an average of four months not only for meals, but also for the companionship, wellness checks, and sense of security that come with them. Meals on Wheels America has acknowledged that addressing these infrastructure gaps alone could yield 152 million additional meals and a 14% increase in seniors served, reaching 1.1 million seniors annually.

Not only is her donation key to improving infrastructure, but it is also the kind of investment that can create lasting benefits, continuing to reach more and more people even after the funds are exhausted. Meals on Wheels is not merely a food program; it also serves as an important line of human connection for older Americans, with volunteers often providing informal wellness checks that can make all the difference to seniors living alone. For Meals on Wheels America, this is the biggest publicly disclosed gift in its history. To understand its scale, one only has to compare it with the organization’s 2024 total operating revenue of about $25.3 million. The $70 million gift is roughly 2.8 times what Meals on Wheels America brought in through total operating revenue and support in 2024. Scott’s benevolence will not only improve conditions but also shine a light on a long-standing blind spot in American giving concerning older adults.

“We are deeply grateful for this extraordinary act of generosity and trust that will help us move closer to a world where every senior who needs Meals on Wheels gets it,” said Ellie Hollander, president and chief executive officer at Meals on Wheels America, according to the Austin American Statesman. “This investment will help accelerate our strategic plan and strengthen the capacity of local providers so more seniors can access the meals and social connection they need to live nourished, independent lives.” The immense generosity Scott has shown Meals on Wheels America is the biggest publicly disclosed gift in the organization’s history, and stands as Scott’s second biggest known single donation after her $113 million gift to Prairie View A&M University
