Buyers of multi-million-dollar, limited-edition cars are spending more money than ever on customization to ensure hyper-exclusivity. Thanks to this growing trend, almost all top-end car manufacturers have introduced their own personalization programs. However, you’ll be surprised by how much these super-rich individuals are willing to pay to make their exotic cars unique. In an interview with TopGear magazine, Bugatti’s boss Mate Rimac revealed that the French marque’s customers spend, on average, €500,000 (around $530,000) on customizations to personalize their hypercars. To put that number into context, you can buy a Ferrari Roma and a Porsche 911 GT3 with that money and still have enough left to splurge on track days.
However, half a million dollars isn’t an eye-watering sum for Bugatti owners, especially considering the ownership cost of such hypercars usually runs into hundreds of thousands of dollars. You might remember that former Bugatti president Wolfgang Duerheimer had said that an average Bugatti customer has about 84 cars, three jets, and one yacht. But some customers do not even flinch before dropping several millions of dollars to get their hands on a truly bespoke vehicle. The record-breaking Bugatti Mistral is the perfect example to demonstrate the demand for one-offs.
Bugatti introduced the Mistral in 2022 as the first open-top hypercar based on the Chiron. Limited to just 99 examples, the roadster was launched with a starting price of $5 million. However, a VIP Bugatti customer requested the marque to build him a record-breaking version of the hypercar. This mystery client also owns the other three record-beating Bugatti models: the Veyron 16.4 Super Sport World Record Edition, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse World Record Edition, and the Chiron Super Sport 300+.
The one-off Bugatti built to set a new world record is priced at 14 million euros (about $14.75 million), almost three times the starting price of the standard Mistral.
