At the beginning of this year, Chinese EV maker BYD launched a new luxury sub-brand named YangWang along with introducing its first two models, the U8 SUV and the all-electric U9 supercar. Both premium EVs have been grabbing a lot of attention thanks to their super-impressive specifications, features, and relatively affordable price tags. After impressing everyone with its first two models, YangWang is ready to launch its third model called the U6. While the premium brand is yet to officially debut its newest model, the company teased the U6 at the 2023 edition of the Auto Shanghai show. A few more details were also leaked a few weeks ago through images released by the EU patent office, which suggest the upcoming premium sedan from China is going square off against the Tesla Model S.
The image showcased by the company at a recent conference and the design render released by the EU patent office show that the U6 will feature an exterior design inspired by both the Tesla Model S and the Porsche Taycan. A few interesting things we noticed include a low-slung stance, cameras instead of side mirrors, retractable door handles, and an active rear spoiler along with wheel covers to enhance aerodynamics.
In fact, YangWang claims that one of the highlights of the U6 will be its ultra-low drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.195. Obviously, a lower drag coefficient is very important for EVs to maximize electric range. But a drag coefficient of 0.195 means it will be more aerodynamically efficient than the Tesla Model S Plaid and Lucid Air.
Just to give you some context, the Tesla Model S Plaid has a 0.208 Cd, while the Lucid Air features a 0.21 Cd. There are rumors that the U6 will also be underpinned by the same E4 platform as found in the U8 SUV and the U9 supercar and boasts a quad-motor setup with over 1,180 hp. Additionally, the premium electric sedan will have a starting price of around 800,000 yuan (around $110,000), which will make it slightly more affordable than the Tesla Model S Plaid in China.
