Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s $500 million megayacht, Koru, has finally sailed home to the waters that inspired its very identity. For the first time since its delivery in 2023, the 417-foot Oceanco superyacht glided past Tiritiri Matangi Island before arriving at Silo Superyacht Marina in the heart of Auckland a few hours later. It is a full-circle moment for the luxury vessel, owned by the world’s fourth-richest man, whose net worth stands at $272 billion. In Māori, koru refers to an unfurling fern frond, a powerful symbol of creation, fresh beginnings, growth, and rejuvenation. Now, three years later, it has arrived in the land from which its identity stems, and its presence is drawing ample attention.
According to one Reddit user, the world’s largest sailing yacht arrived with a police escort and was berthed at Silo Marina’s J2 and J3 berths, which are built to accommodate vessels up to 140 meters. Onlookers were enthralled by uninterrupted views of the maritime marvel, which boasts triple masts soaring 230 feet high, twice the height of the 121-foot concrete silos overlooking the marina that gave the area its name.
Koru’s Pacific voyage-
The Koru superyacht has had a busy few weeks, journeying from Cairns, Australia, to Alotau, Papua New Guinea, and finally to Auckland, as reported by Marine Traffic. During this time, power couple Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez even celebrated their first wedding anniversary aboard Koru near Fiji’s Yasawa Islands in June.
The Bezos Earth Fund has been actively working across five Pacific nations on ocean conservation, supporting initiatives spanning more than 625,000 square miles. Vice chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, Sánchez Bezos, has spent considerable time in the Pacific this summer, speaking out about the communities whose livelihoods depend on its waters.
Silo Marina, an Auckland address for floating giants-
The trip to Auckland makes sense not only out of geographic proximity and a nod to the Māori roots of the vessel’s name, but also because Auckland serves as a practical hub for Pacific cruising. Silo Marina, which received a specialist marina award just four days before Koru arrived, can seamlessly handle the Oceanco mammoth’s biosecurity clearance, supply fuel and shore power, and manage provisioning and maintenance.
Under New Zealand customs rules, foreign superyachts can stay for up to 21 months, and refits and repair work qualify for a zero-rated 0% GST (sales tax). Because about 90% of superyacht spending in the country goes toward maintenance, refits, and berthage, these tax exemptions are designed to attract marine traffic. Still, tax perks hardly seem like a motivator for a man who happily drops $50 million a year to maintain his luxury floating estate. When in Cairns, the megayacht reportedly ran up a staggering $1.4-million bill over just a few days merely to fuel its massive diesel engines and feed its 40-head crew.
The world’s largest sailing yacht and its features-
For a vessel that has always been sheathed in secrecy, Koru yacht manages to impress onlookers with her exteriors alone, and there is plenty of it! The 417-footer captivates with its triple masts (taller than the Great Pyramid of Giza), the wooden figurehead on the bow resembling Lauren Sánchez, though intended as the Norse goddess Freyja in actuality, and her sheer size. In Auckland’s Silo Marina and elsewhere, it doesn’t take much for the world’s largest sailing yacht to stand out, towering over other luxury vessels that would have seemed perfectly impressive before the arrival of the Oceanco goliath.
The exteriors of the 17-meter-wide vessel are equipped with water cannons to fend off potential threats, a glass-bottom pool, three spa pools, and an interior designed by the London-based firm Mlinaric, Henry & Zervudachi. Its biggest amenity is perhaps the $75 million support vessel Abeona, currently in Singapore, which tags along with toys, tenders, and a helicopter for the mothership, along with extra crew quarters.
