Lamborghini has expanded the Urus line-up with a new plug-in hybrid version that retains the V8, packs more power, and gets subtle styling updates

You might be aware that Lamborghini is gradually electrifying its entire line-up, and the highly popular Urus performance SUV has become the latest to get a hybrid powertrain. The Italian marque has unveiled the new Urus SE, a plug-in hybrid version of the company’s best-selling model, which packs more power and arrives with subtle styling updates. Instead of downsizing the combustion engine, Lamborghini has retained the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 engine that is capable of producing 612hp and 590lb-ft of torque.

Supplementing the mighty V8 is an electric motor that is housed inside the eight-speed automatic transmission. The e-motor produces 189 horsepower and 356 pound-feet, bringing the combined output to 789hp and a tarmac-ripping 701lb-ft of torque.

Thanks to a more potent powertrain, the Urus SE can accelerate from zero to 62mph in 3.4 seconds, making it a second quicker than the Urus S. The Performante is still the quickest to 62mph in the range, at 3.3 seconds. However, the PHEV is the quickest out of the three when it comes to reaching 124mph from a standstill, completing it in 11.4 seconds. With a top speed of 194mph, the Urus SE is also a tad bit faster than the gas-only versions.

The electric motor draws its power from a 25.7-kWh lithium-ion battery mounted below the cargo floor. In the pure EV mode, the SUV can hit a top speed of 81mph, after which the V8 automatically kicks in. Furthermore, the PHEV gets 37 miles of pure electric range, while the emissions are down by 80 percent as compared to combustion-engine counterparts.

Lamborghini has also tweaked the design to give the performance SUV a cleaner look. The hood has been redesigned to reach further down towards the bumper without any creases, while the headlight design has been updated to emulate the new Revuelto. The rear gets a new tailgate design inspired by the full-width honeycomb design element seen on the Gallardo LP550-4.

According to Lamborghini, the change has resulted in an increase in downforce by 35 percent compared to the Urus S. On the inside, the dashboard has been updated with a larger 12.3-inch touchscreen display along with physical toggle-style controls. The pricing has not been announced yet, but it could very well be the most expensive variant in the line-up.
