To give a fitting farewell to the outgoing AMG GT3, Mercedes has introduced a limited edition, non-homologated version of the race car. Unveiled during the Monterey Car Week, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport is the final AMG GT3 variant to be powered by the mighty 6.3-liter V8. The special edition also celebrates the 130th anniversary of the German automaker’s entry into motorsports. On July 22, 1894, a race car powered by a Daimler-licensed engine scored its first victory in a race from Paris to Rouen.
Since the AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport is not homologated, it is not limited by the strict regulations for the GT3 racing series. As a result, the engineers had free rein to extract maximum performance from the race car.
The naturally aspirated 6.3-liter V8 under the hood is not fitted with the competition air restrictor, while it is equipped with a special exhaust to produce more power. Mercedes says the V8 can produce 671 horsepower and 538 pound-feet of torque, making it the German brand’s most potent GT3 variant ever. The competition cars generally have around 550hp on tap, depending on the regulations.
The special edition has a sequential six-speed racing transmission mounted to the rear axle and a carbon fiber prop shaft. In addition to the unrestricted V8 engine, the AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport features a modified aero package and upgraded hardware. It gets a new front splitter, louvers in the front fenders, and redesigned side skirts, which work with a massive rear diffuser and a gigantic rear wing to offer 15 percent more downforce than the race car. Furthermore, the final AMG GT3 variant is fitted with carbon-ceramic brakes instead of the steel discs required by GT3 regulations.
Inside, the AMG GT3 Edition 130Y Motorsport is almost identical to the race car. It features the same safe equipment, which includes a carbon fiber safety cell bolted to the chassis, a five-point harness, safety nets, a steel roll cage, a fire suppression system, a motorsport safety fuel tank, and an emergency hatch.
The limited edition will also come with a custom car cover and special racing gear developed in collaboration with Puma. It includes a personalized racing suit, gloves, racing underwear, shoes that match the car’s exterior, and a customized Bell helmet. The production is limited to just 13 examples, each priced at $1.136 million before VAT.
