Opera isn’t a yacht so much as a moving piece of state-level luxury. Built by Lürssen in Bremen and designed inside and out by Terence Disdale, the 480-foot (146.4-meter) giant sits in the top tier of privately owned megayachts, closer in volume to a compact cruise ship than anything most people picture when they hear the word “superyacht.” And in 2025, it didn’t just travel, it worked the map.

According to Boat Pro, Opera is among the most traveled superyachts of 2025, logging 29,453 nautical miles. That number matters because it is not a soft lifestyle claim; it’s a hard distance. It equals roughly one and a half laps around the Earth. Most yachts this size spend long stretches anchored or parked in familiar marinas, moving only when the calendar demands it. Opera did the opposite. It stayed in motion, with an itinerary more typical of an expedition ship, except this one comes with helipads and a rising-floor pool.


Opera is widely linked to H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, and a son of the country’s founding father, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Official biographies describe him as an avid reader, a student of history, and a keen sportsman with an interest in scuba diving, which makes Opera’s role feel less like a toy and more like a private roaming base. Unlike many owners who charter their yachts to soften costs, Opera is not offered for charter and is not listed for sale. This is an exclusive floating palace used only by the Sheikh and his inner circle.

The scale is obvious even from the basics. Industry estimates put Opera at around 12,500 gross tons, with a beam over 21 meters, a steel hull, and diesel-electric propulsion based around MTU machinery. Speed figures vary, but most estimates land around 20 to 22 knots at the top end, with a cruising pace in the mid-teens where a vessel of this size becomes smooth and quiet.

The interior is famously private, but Opera is widely believed to carry a large guest complement, often rumored at around 48 guests looked after by roughly 80 crew, which tells you what the yacht is really designed for. It is built to host, to move a small society in comfort, and to stay at sea for extended stretches without compromise.

What’s visible through photos is enough to understand the intent. Opera has two helipads, one forward and one aft. She also has two pools, including a main-deck pool around 10 meters long with a rising floor that can transform the space into a flat deck for events. It is classic Lürssen thinking at the highest level, not just luxury, but luxury that can reshape itself depending on the moment.

Opera’s 2025 season began as an Eastern Mediterranean grand tour. She spent time in Greece, including Piraeus and the Ionian Islands, and was widely reported to have stopped in Albania, Montenegro, and Croatia, along with time in Venice. For most yachts, that would have been the whole year’s highlight reel. Opera treated it like a first act.

In Durrës, Albania, the yacht reportedly took on around 320,000 liters of diesel in a single refueling stop. At European bunker prices, that amount is easily in the $600,000 to $700,000 range. Nothing captures the scale of a yacht like Opera better than fuel numbers, because they strip away the romance and leave only the hard mechanics of running a floating city.

The second half of the year revealed how geopolitics now shapes even the world’s most privileged itineraries. Instead of transiting the Red Sea, Opera routed around Africa via the Cape of Good Hope, mirroring the wider superyacht fleet’s caution due to security instability in the region. Opera was photographed in Cape Town near the V&A Waterfront and then continued up the east coast of Africa. By late season, AIS indications had Opera back in the Persian Gulf, effectively returning home to Abu Dhabi and Mina Zayed after a year that looked like a Mediterranean summer stitched to a near-circumnavigation of Africa. Opera is commonly valued at around $450 million, and keeping her moving is not remotely comparable to the costs of ordinary luxury. Annual operating costs run into the tens of millions, which makes the spending feel like the price of a brand-new Lamborghini every single day, except instead of a car, you are buying fuel, crew salaries, maintenance, insurance, logistics, port fees, and the most expensive luxury of all, constant mobility.

Even then, the yacht still manages to collect surreal footnotes. In Greece, reports claimed Prince George was aboard at one point, and Opera allegedly made an unscheduled stop so McDonald’s could be delivered by tender. On a 146-meter yacht with two helipads, that might be the most modern detail of all. Not the hardware, but the ability to turn whim into action without slowing down. 29,453 nautical miles is not vacation mileage. It is a statement of ownership that treats the Mediterranean, Africa, and the Indian Ocean as one continuous backyard, and treats the Earth itself as a route rather than a boundary.
