ANA offers Japans first domestic caviar to their first-class passengers

ANA (All Nippon Airways) will be dishing out some ‘Miyazaki Caviar 1983’ for its first-class passengers travelling on their Western routes, from March to May 2016. Japan has seen a surge in demand for caviar in recent years. The domestically-produced Miyazaki caviar 1983 from the Miyazaki Prefecture sturgeon aims to expand its caviar industry to about 10 billion yen ($ 800 million) annually, according to the government’s fishery policy division. The company now plans to export its first shipment overseas, on the basis of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations resolution of the Washington Treaty which went into effect in September 2015 by the Fisheries Agency and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, that states that an endorsement is necessary for the export of caviar under a “domestic unified labeling system”, registered in the country for the first time.

Passengers will be served Miyazaki caviar along with some marinated scallops and sea urchins. The Miyazaki caviar 1983 is also available to purchase from their website, priced at 6500 yen ($57) for a 12gm box.
