Patek Philippe breaks a 24-year silence with the Cubitus, a bold square sibling to the Nautilus and Aquanaut.

Patek Philippe has finally debuted the Cubitus watch collection, putting a rest to all the rumors that have been doing rounds of the internet over the last week. The collection was leaked several days before the official launch thanks to an ad in the Fortune Magazine. It was such a massive surprise that many people, including prominent collectors, thought it was fake. After all, the Patek Philippe Cubitus is the watch brand’s first new collection in 25 years. The new collection includes the steel 5821A, the steel-and-gold 5821AR, and the Instantaneous Grand Date platinum 5822P, all of which received polar opinions.

The Cubitus collection is a new interpretation of the sporty-chic watch which has a very resemblance to the brand’s iconic Nautilus line. “You should not always reinvent everything from zero,” said Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern. “Why? Take the best of what you know and improve it.” However, that might not work favorably for Patek Philippe.

As far as the design goes, Cubitus references feature a more shape as compared to the legendary octagonal case of the Nautilus. All three share the same 45mm-wide case design with a square bezel with rounded corners. The hinges have also been redesigned to match the square shape of the case. Furthermore, all three models feature sapphire display casebacks.

Beyond the new shape, the biggest talking point of the Cubitus collection is new Caliber 240 PS CI J LU movement for the Ref. 5822P. Based on the 240PS IRM CLU, the movement combines a large date window, moon phase, and day of the week indications. Patek says the caliber resulted in filing of six patents for its tangential brake, dual-function spring mechanism, flexible corrector, dual-function spring, flexible plate, and positioning mechanism.

The platinum model is also the only one in the collection to come on a strap made of an ultra-resistant composite material. The other two variants of the Cubitus are powered by the brand’s in-house 26-330 S C self-winding movement with a date. As far as the pricing goes, the steel 5821/1A-001 is $41,243, the steel-gold 5821/1AR-001 costs $61,275, while the platinum 5822P-001 is priced at $88,378.
