Hollywood superstar Sylvester Stallone’s prized Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime 6300 was sold at Sotheby’s auction in New York yesterday, fetching $5,400,000. While the final sale is well above the upper limit of the pre-sale estimate of $5 million given by the auction house, the ultra-rare timepiece did not come close to the $8 million mark that was predicted by some experts. Let me remind you that it was the first time a Grandmaster Chime 6300 was appearing at an auction; that’s unless we include the one-off version Patek created especially for the charity auction Only Watch. That unique piece still holds the record for the most expensive watch ever sold, fetching a whopping $31 million in 2019.
The most complicated Patek timepiece earned Stallone a considerably big profit of $2.9 million by filliping it within three years of ownership. The legendary actor purchased the highly desirable timepiece from Patek in 2021 by paying $2.5 million. However, acquiring the timepiece was much more complicated for Stallone than paying the selling price.
In a YouTube video released by Sotheby’s before the auction, Stallone recalled how he had to personally appeal and write letters to the Patek board to be eligible to buy the Grandmaster Chime 6300. The action icon even called his white gold 6300G-010 a “work of art” on a par with a Monet painting and said he had “a real sense of accomplishment owning it.” Interestingly, Stallone never actually wore the watch, and it’s still sealed in its original packaging.
The auctioned watch came in an equally grand presentation box engraved with Stallone’s name. Stallone’s name also appears on a “Grandmaster Chime book” and a certificate of origin. Also included along the watch were a travel case, cufflinks, USB drive, sealed setting pin, hang tag, an Apple iPad with a Patek Philippe leather case, adapter, charger, and Apple AirPods with a Patek Philippe case.
