In a remarkable feat of horological engineering, Ulysse Nardin has unveiled what they claim to be the world’s lightest mechanical dive watch. The aptly named Diver [AIR] weighs a mere 52 grams with its strap attached—less than the weight of a typical chocolate bar. This revolutionary timepiece represents a radical departure from conventional dive watch design while honoring the brand’s maritime heritage that dates back to the 19th century.
The 44mm Diver [AIR] achieves its extraordinary lightness through an innovative modular construction that combines recycled titanium with carbon fiber components. The middle case, crafted from 90% recycled titanium, ensures the watch maintains its impressive 200-meter water resistance.
Meanwhile, the side elements and lugs utilize “Nylo-Foil,” an innovative composite made from recycled fishing nets and upcycled carbon fiber. Even the luminous bezel insert is forged from carbon salvaged from IMOCA sailing boats.
Perhaps most impressive is the newly developed UN-374 caliber that powers the timepiece. Weighing just 7 grams, this automatic movement has been radically skeletonized, with much of its architecture hollowed out to create a striking visual effect. The previous X-shaped top plate has been removed entirely, revealing more of the movement’s intricate workings. Despite this extreme weight reduction, the movement maintains a robust 90-hour power reserve and can withstand impacts of up to 5000g—comparable to many METAS-certified dive watches.
The result of this engineering is a timepiece that is 80% air and only 20% movement components when viewed from the front. The skeletonized dial features applied indices with Super-LumiNova for visibility in deep waters, while contrasting sandblasted and brushed finishes create visual depth across the predominantly monochromatic design.
Despite its featherweight construction, the Diver [AIR] doesn’t compromise on functionality. The automatic winding mechanism, essential for dive watch certification, has been preserved, and the watch delivers all the technical requirements expected from a professional diving instrument. It comes with two interchangeable elastic fabric straps—one orange and one white—weighing just 6 grams each.
For collectors and enthusiasts interested in this groundbreaking timepiece, the Ulysse Nardin Diver [AIR] is priced at $38,000, reflecting its status as an ultra-premium technical achievement in modern watchmaking.
