An Hermès Birkin sold for $221,844 in Hong Kong becoming the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction

Here at LuxuryLaunches, record busting handbags are fast becoming the new normal. In fact, we look forward to the day when currency becomes obsolete and all transactions are carried out with totes and clutches. The latest handbag to make headlines is a fuchsia Hermès Birkin with diamonds that fetched a record 1.72 million Hong Kong dollars (US $221,844) in an auction setting the record for the most expensive handbag ever sold at auction.

The hot pink crocodile bag was made in 2014, with a diamond-studded 18-karat white gold clasp and lock and was snapped up by an anonymous phone bidder at Christie’s handbags and accessories sale in Hong Kong on Monday. According to Christie’s most of the buyers were private Asian collectors.
This is hardly the first record for Hermès in the handbag category. The previous world record was also held by a Birkin- a diamond-adorned rouge crocodile Hermès Birkin bag that sold for US $203,150 in 2011. Seems like this is one handbag that never shows any signs of slowing down.
