Audi debuts limited Audi Sport Edition R8 at New York Auto Show

Audi’s Quattro GmbH performance and technology division was officially renamed into Audi Sport GmbH last year and one of the first special edition models customized by the division will premiere at the New York International Auto Show. The limited Audi Sport Edition R8 celebrates the marque’s motorsport history and the R8’s very own racetrack reputation. “In 2016, we had the most successful year in the history of Audi Sport customer racing, our customer sport department,” said Stephan Winkelmann, CEO of Audi Sport GmbH. “With the R8 LMS we brought home 24 titles, scored 85 race victories and tallied up over 100 other podium finishes.”

Mechanically, the special edition R8 is identical to the standard mid-engine sports coupe and the special treatment by Audi Sport is mostly cosmetic. On the outside, buyers will get to choose between floret silver in two finishes, mythos black, and ibis white for the exterior paint. The sideblades covering the side vents and exterior mirrors are finished in contrasting red along with the front splitter, grille, and insert in the rear diffuser painted in a deep black. The package includes a set of 20-inch, forged aluminum wheels wrapped in 245/30 front and 305/30 rear tires. The brake calipers get a high-gloss red finish, while the V10 Plus version’s brakes have an anthracite finish.

Inside the cabin, the car comes with illuminated door sills and the color of the interior depends on exterior paint choice. The seats and door trim feature black and red Nappa leather, while the seat backrests are embossed with R8 logos. Dark silver contrast stitching and gloss carbon inlays add more character to the interior along with other ornaments that have been specially designed for this limited edition model. Only 200 units will be sold worldwide with the prices starting at €181,900 (about $193,100), with the V10 Plus fetching €205,800 (about $218,500).
