Ferrari’s highly successful prototype race car from the nineties is headed for auction and is expected to fetch upwards of $6 million at Pebble Beach

An ultra-rare example of the Ferrari 333 SP Evoluzione race car is soon going to cross the auction block. Gooding & Company, the official auction house of the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, has announced an incredible line-up of some of the most successful and desirable classic race cars for its upcoming sale. The Ferrari 333 SP Evoluzione is one of them. Close to three decades ago, Ferrari surprised everyone with its decision to return to prototype racing after a 20-year absence with the 333 SP.

A worthy successor to the legendary Ferrari 312 P, the open-cockpit race car went on to become one of the most successful sport prototype cars in Ferrari’s history. Of the 126 races the 333 SP entered, it emerged victorious in nearly fifty, securing wins at events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the 24 Hours of Daytona, and the 12 Hours of Sebring.

The example up for auction (chassis no. 10) is one of the nine race cars built by Italian race car manufacturer Dallara. Andy Evans’ Scandia Motorsport team originally raced it for the 1995 season. Between 1995 and ’97, the race car garnered 13 podium finishes in the IMSA WSC Championships and top 10 finishes at Sebring and Daytona.

However, its greatest success came at the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans, where it was placed 6th Overall and 2nd in Class, securing the best overall finish for a 333 SP in the history of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. A year later, the chassis no. 10 was sold to a Venezuelan collector after entering just one race in the US. Since then, it has changed hands several times and regularly participated in historic events and track days. Till today, the race car still features the now-iconic MOMO livery that it wore during the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans.

It is powered by a 4.0-liter V12 engine capable of producing 650bhp. At some point, the gearbox was replaced by specialist Michelotto. The 333 SP is one of the highlights of the Pebble Beach Auctions and is expected to sell anywhere between $6 million to $8 million.
