Police in Connecticut were able to track a stolen $575,000 Ferrari supercar using the $130 AirPods the millionaire owner had forgotten in the car

One fortunate owner of a 2023 Ferrari 812 GTS worth over $575,000 is probably a lifetime AirPods fan now. Thanks to a pair of AirPods, his high-power Italian exotic supercar was tracked down after it was stolen in Greenwich, Connecticut. As we’ve seen before, when car thieves make off with a supercar, it’s hard for the cops to keep up. But when the police have a helping hand from technology, it makes all the difference.

In this case, the police could trace the stolen Ferrari 812 GTS without having to run it down. That’s a good thing — the 6.5-litre V12 with 800 horsepower and a 0-60mph of under 3 seconds would’ve made the chase one-sided. While this masterpiece of Italian engine building revs out to 8,900rpm, over 80 percent of its 530 lb-ft torque is delivered at just 3,500rpm.

According to reports, the owner had left a pair of Apple AirPods in the car when it was stolen. Using Apple’s Find My functionality, which works through the extensive network of Apple devices to track a lost device even when it’s not in direct Bluetooth range, the police tracked it down to a gas station in Waterbury, Connecticut.

The car thief, known to the police on the scene, then ran the Ferrari into the police cruiser and took off on foot, leaving his personal Apple iPhone behind in the car. The cops were then able to access his phone, and photos of the interior of the Ferrari on the phone, allowing them to irrefutably link the theft back to the suspect. For everyone who says technology is evil, it’s all about how you use it.
