Created specially for the Sultan of Brunei, this one-off Lamborghini LM002 Wagon is headed to auction

We all know about the Sultan of Brunei’s obsession with cars. While the mysterious cache of exotic cars collected by the monarch has been hidden from public view, it is rumored that his collection comprises around 7000 cars worth more than $5 billion, making it the world’s biggest private car collection. Many of them are one-offs, specially commissioned by the absolute ruler of this tiny oil-rich state. One such incredible machine is this 1986 Lamborghini LM002 Wagon that was once part of the Sultan’s collection. The boxy off-road vehicle is soon going to be auctioned off by SBX Cars, giving car collectors a unique chance to own a rare automobile.

The LM002 is a military-derived four-door truck manufactured by Lamborghini between 1986 and 1993. However, the Sultan wanted his Lamborghini SUV to be unique, so he commissioned Italian coachbuilder Salvatore Diomante to turn his LM002 into a one-of-a-kind wagon. While a total of three LM002 wagons were built during the entire production run of the off-roader, this is the only build that Lamborghini officially sanctioned. According to the listing, it was delivered new to the Sultan by a Lamborghini dealership in Singapore.

The bespoke LM002 wagon is one of the very few vehicles to leave the monarch’s insane collection. It was previously listed for sale in August 2009. The beastly vehicle features Argento Metallizzato paint on the outside. However, it was originally painted black. The cabin is decked out in Cuoio Nero and is loaded with extras, including air conditioning, power windows, a stereo system and DVD player, a custom dashboard, wood trim, and a sunroof.

Underneath the hood is a 5.2-liter V12 shared with the Countach that churns out 450 hp and 368 lbs.-ft of torque. The Sultan’s LM002 is a left-hand-drive version and is listed on Lamborghini’s registry of historic cars. The odometer currently displays 10,383 kilometers (about 6,500 miles), while the vehicle comes with service records, period details about the wagon conversion, and a new set of tires. The Sultan of Brunei’s LM002 is scheduled to go up for auction on SBX Cars on August 7. The auction house has given no pre-sale estimate for the one-off machine, but we won’t be surprised if it breaches the seven-figure mark thanks to its provenance.
