Rock legend Sammy Hagar’s one-of-one LaFerrari was sold last Saturday at Barrett-Jackson’s Scottsdale Fall Collector Car Auction. Custom built for the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, the 2015 LaFerrari managed to fetch $4,675,000, making it the most expensive car sold at the auction. Furthermore, Hagar’s LaFerrari also set a sales record for its model year, according to the auction house. The previous record was held by a 2015 LaFerrari that was sold for $3,910,000 in August 2022 at Broad Arrow Group Auctions.
Craig Jackson, CEO of Barrett-Jackson, said he was “honored and excited to have sold my friend Sammy Hagar’s stunning LaFerrari. We had no doubt we’d find it a good home. Sammy and the new owner connected after the sale and it felt right. We found the LaFerrari a good home.”
The former Van Halen frontman had flown to Scottsdale, Arizona, for the auction in his custom Challenger 300 jet, which features the same color scheme as the bespoke LaFerrari. In fact, the Red Rocker had asked the highly skilled people at Ferrari to customize the cabin of the LaFerrari to match the interior of his private jet while configuring his hypercar in Italy a decade ago. The result was the world’s only LaFerrari finished in a unique off-white color on the outside and a matching interior.
“Quite honestly, it was exhausting being part of the bidding war,” Hagar told USA Today after the auction. “I’m thinking the whole time, do I really want to do this? Seller’s remorse and all. When that gavel came down and they said ‘Sold!,’ I wasn’t sure if I was heartbroken or relieved. What an experience.”
The one-of-a-kind LaFerrari was to be auctioned at the beginning of this year. However, the auction had to be put on hold because of a surprising mechanical issue. Right before the auction, a full vehicle inspection by Barrett-Jackson revealed that the LaFerrari’s battery was dead and needed a replacement. The highly specialized ion starter battery that powers the electric motor apparently had reached the end of its eight-year life span. The replacement battery could not be sourced in time, delaying the auction by nine months. Nevertheless, Hagar earned a handsome profit from the sale, considering he had spent around $1.5 million to buy the custom LaFerrari.
