Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates may no longer be the world’s richest man, but he and Melinda French Gates now sit at the apex of the most expensive divorce on record. After reportedly handing over an estimated $76 billion to the mother of his three children when they split in 2021, following 27 years of marriage and no prenup, the tech tycoon has made a fresh multibillion-dollar divorce payout five years later. In simple divorce math, Gates has ended up paying roughly double what Jeff Bezos did in his $38 billion settlement with MacKenzie Scott.
The philanthropist has now parted ways with a whopping $8 billion payment to Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, the private foundation of his ex-wife, according to tax filings. The most expensive divorce in history has just become even more costly. The payment is part of a broader decision to give Melinda $12.5 billion to support her independent work after she stepped down as co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2024. This is Gates following through on that promise. Tax filings revealed that $7.88 billion of that commitment was transferred in 2024 from the Gates Foundation’s own assets to her Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation. In effect, money he had already pledged to global causes is now parked in a vehicle fully controlled by his ex-wife. According to The New York Times, the full $12.5 billion agreement has now been fulfilled, implying that the remaining $4.6 billion likely moved in 2025.
Melinda recently said, “For far too long, society has normalized women’s suffering instead of solving it. It’s time to give women’s health the attention and investment it deserves.” She now has the financial ammunition to charge ahead in her endeavors, turning a record-breaking divorce into a record-breaking redistribution of power and capital. The 61-year-old’s Pivotal Philanthropies Foundation, Pivotal Initiatives Fund, and Pivotal Ventures LLC come together to work on accelerating the pace of social progress for women, from women’s health and reproductive rights to workplace equity, the care economy, and youth mental health. With this new financial fuel, her philanthropic platform is already inching close to a billion dollars a year in grants, backing projects like the Decolonizing Wealth Project and coworker.org.
In September 2025, Melinda French Gates announced a $100 million partnership with Wellcome Leap and her Pivotal organizations to accelerate women’s health research, focusing on chronic conditions and under-researched diseases. Come November, on a single day, Bill Gates’ ex-billionaire wife channeled another $250 million into 80 women’s health organizations across 22 countries.
Like MacKenzie Scott, who turned her $38 billion settlement into a philanthropic machine, Melinda is using her even larger settlement to power a more structured foundation aimed squarely at reshaping how the world values women.
