Mark Zuckerberg seems to be in a great hurry to establish himself as one of the most prominent collectors of rare and highly desirable luxury watches. Just a few days after being spotted a $900,000 Swiss masterpiece in Meta’s policy change announcement video, the centi-billionaire has already expanded his collection with another horological wonder.
Making an appearance on The Joe Rogan Experience, the 40-year-old wore an incredibly special F.P. Journe watch for the popular podcast. Called the F.P. Journe FFC, the $850,000 timepiece was born from a collaboration with none other than Francis Ford Coppola.
The fascinating story of F.P. Journe FFC
When legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola received an F.P. Journe Chronomètre à Résonance as a birthday gift from his wife Eleanor in 2009, it sparked an extraordinary collaboration that would push the boundaries of mechanical watchmaking. During a 2012 meeting at Coppola’s Napa Valley winery, the filmmaker posed an intriguing question to master watchmaker François-Paul Journe: could a watch tell time using finger counting, an ancient practice known as dactylonomy?
The result of this creative spark is the F.P. Journe FFC, a masterpiece of mechanical innovation featuring a central titanium hand in an armored glove that displays hours through twelve distinct finger combinations. Inspired by 16th-century surgeon Ambroise Paré’s mechanical prosthetics, the hand is powered by an intricate system of ten cams that control individual finger movements, while minutes are displayed on a rotating outer ring. The watch’s prototype, the FFC Blue, made headlines when it sold for CHF 4.5 million at the 2021 Only Watch auction.
F.P. Journe ended up making a series production version based on prototype, with its production limited to less than 15 examples per year. Despite its mechanical complexity, the production version of the FFC maintains elegant proportions within its 42mm platinum case, standing just 10.7mm tall.
Powered by F.P. Journe’s Octa 1300 caliber movement with a five-day power reserve, the watch features titanium bridges treated with Titalyt for a sophisticated dark grey finish. This extraordinary timepiece represents the perfect fusion of cinematic imagination and horological expertise, proving that even in the digital age, mechanical watchmaking can still surprise and innovate.
Zuckerberg’s love for F.P. Journe
The FFC is not the first F.P. Journe to be owned by the Meta CEO. His collection includes several rare timepieces made by the boutique Swiss watch manufacturer. It all began with the F.P. Journe Chronomètre Souverain Havana in Platinum which retails for around $100,000. There are also rumors that Zuckerberg is the mystery buyer who splurged $8.4 million on F.P. Journe’s Tourbillon Souverain à Remontoire d’Egalité from 1993 – the first watch sold by the Swiss watchmaker. However, the Facebook co-founder has not been spotted wearing the timepiece as of yet.
