‘The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’ might have disappointed its fans as it was nowhere as good as the Lord of the Rings Trilogy but this bronze Smaug sculpture created by artist John Howe and WETA Workshop is uber-cool. The WETA website has a huge selection of Lord of the Ring and The Hobbit collectibles including the freaky life-size Gollum statue which we covered recently but this Smaug sculpture is definitely their finest. Smaug the Golden is the first sculpture in John Howe’s and Weta’s range of sculptures from Middle-earth and some of you might recognize it as the sculpture is based on John’s original artwork created in 1990 and adorned the cover of the paperback edition of The Hobbit by Grafton Books in 1991.
This made to order bronze sculpture from the Art of John Howe collections measures 30 cm x 40 cm x 40 cm (H x W x D) and comes with a price-tag of $4,900 which excludes the shipping cost. The statue sits on a base of natural wood. Upon the confirmation of the order, the delivery will take up to six months as it’s a made to order item. Only twenty of these Smaug sculptures will be made with each of them bearing its serial number and have its own Certificate of Authenticity signed by John Howe and Richard Taylor.
