Chinese man faces social boycott for dropping his son to school in a Ferrari

The idea of “if you’ve got it, flaunt it” didn’t quite work for a man from China, who is now facing social boycott at his kid’s school.” According to the City Express, a newspaper in Hangzhou, the man, only known by his last name “Li “, is a senior executive in an unidentified property developing company, earning more than 4 million Yuan (US$578,000) a year. Li owns a Ferrari 488 GTB and used the Italian supercar to drop his kid to school, to which the school authorities and parents of other kids objected calling it excessive show of wealth. The chat records on the messaging app WeChat’s class group show that Li had been informed about some parents complaining about it. The teacher said it would lead to unhealthy environment in class that was not conducive to developing fellowship among kids.

The teacher of the class backed by many parents demanded Li to use a more modest car to drop his kid to school. “It’s not proper. You should not show off, no matter how rich you are,” said one parent. “If it’s just dropping the kid at school, can’t you just use a regular car?” another commented. “You are not short of money anyway.” However, Li refused to back down, saying he had worked hard to earn the money and his kid deserves the very best. “If [seeing others] driving a racing car hurts feelings, your children are too sensitive,” he wrote. “Besides, why should I buy another car just to serve your needs?” Li was soon removed from the chat group. The incident also started to trend on Weibo, China’s equivalent of Twitter, where the story garnered nearly 30,000 comments and over 12,000 forwards. There were people in support of both sides, with some disagreeing with the teacher removing a parent from a chat group because of a difference of opinion, while others commented that the teacher along with parents could have used it as an opportunity for the children to learn about values.
