Megadonor MacKenzie Scott has made a billion-dollar impact once again, generously donating $2 billion to 360 different charities. It is a much more significant amount compared to her most recent donation of $2.6 million to the Southside Community Health Services which would serve more than 18,000 people. Known for her transformative philanthropy, Scott’s recent contributions have supported a diverse range of organizations, from the Asian American Journalists Association to an abortion pill provider. Fulfilling her pledge to give, she has become a crucial ally to various groups, including rural communities in India and several legal aid services. While the exact amounts given to each organization are undisclosed, it’s known that Howard University College of Medicine received $12 million.
Other beneficiaries like Canopy Planet, Start Early, and Malaria Consortium each received $10 million, with some donations even reaching $20 million, as reported by CNN. A proponent of discreet giving, Scott has donated over $16.5 billion to more than 1,900 nonprofits, significantly impacting lives worldwide. After receiving Amazon shares worth approximately $38 billion in her 2019 divorce settlement, she has been consistently generous. The 53-year-old author collaborates with external advisors and consultants to identify impactful organizations.
Her organization, Yield Giving, maintains a database of these donations. Having signed the Giving Pledge in 2019, a commitment made by billionaires to donate the majority of their wealth, Scott stated, ‘In addition to whatever assets life has nurtured in me, I have a disproportionate amount of money to share. My approach to philanthropy will continue to be thoughtful. It will take time and effort and care. But I won’t wait. And I will keep at it until the safe is empty.’
Noted billionaires like Warren Buffet, Bill and Melinda Gates, Larry Ellison, Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan, Ray and Barbara Dalio are all committed to donating a significant portion of their wealth to philanthropic causes. It is safe to say that no one does it like MacKenzie Scott. Her approach not only provides charitable support but also allows nonprofit teams the flexibility to use the funds as they deem fit for others’ benefit.
