Mont Blanc pays homage to Johannes Kepler with a $1.5 million pen!


Mont Blanc’s latest collection celebrates the life and work of Johannes Kepler, the German astronomer and mathematician who created the laws of planetary motion. The Homage to Johannes Kepler High Artistry Limited Edition collection consists of five items, each one a writing instrument dedicated to capturing the sparkling brilliance of the stars and planets that Kepler loved to study.

Johannes Kepler High Pede Serpentari Limited Edition 39
This model is limited to 39 pieces and draws inspiration from a book by Kepler called De Stella Nova in Pede Serpentarii. The white gold pen has a cap lacquered in a rich blue and featuring a ring of diamonds, while its barrel is adorned with 3d engravings of the Sagittarius and Ophiuchus constellations as they appear in the book. It also features a telescope-like silhouette with three rings on the cap which represent the three laws of planetary motion, while an opal on the cap’s top stands in for a supernova. This base model is priced at $48,130.

Johannes Kepler High Artistry Astronomia Nova Limited Edition 9
This model priced at $140,000, celebrates the year 1609 when Kepler’s book Astronomia Nova, was first published. The Ophiuchus and Sagittarius constellations appear again, this time as an Au750 gold skeletonized overlay which are beautiful against the blue lacquer background. On these constellations, diamonds mark the stars while colored gemstones represents planets. The cap features a globe shape lapis encircled by three rows of pavé diamonds.

This model features a bit of horological artistry in addition to its dizzying array of sapphires. With a price tag of $513,000 to $556,000, depending on the color you choose, the pen features an automatic watch movement in the form of a moon-phase indicator on the cap. The display features a central Montblanc logo, which rotates when the movement is operating, and an aventurine and white gold moon phase disk. The movement is powered by a special rewinder located in the pen’s wooden display box.

Johannes Kepler High Artistry Stella Nova Limited Edition 1
Priced at a cool $1.5 million, this pen is the crown jewel of the collection. It dazzles with all the brilliance of 570 diamonds and 5,294 sapphires beautifully arranged to remind the viewer of our home: the Milky Way galaxy. Other cool signatures include a diamond on the nib, another on the compass-style clip and a standout 6.20-carat sparkler on the cap crown. The pen comes with its own porcelain stand designed by Porzellan Manufaktur Nymphenburg. The stand is shaped to resemble a seventeenth century scrolled collar that Kepler himself wore. On top of this collar is an open porcelain scroll that features one of Kepler’s planetary drawings. Also included are a pair of cufflinks shaped like Kepler’s model of the solar system.
