Any new Porsche 911 is a good reason to be excited. New 911s don’t come often but when they do, they always raise the bar for sports cars. Which is exactly what Porsche has said its upcoming “additional flagship model” will do. The car in question is most likely the 992-generation 911 GT2 RS, a model conspicuous by its absence in the lineup so far. The vaguely worded teaser to the new flagship 911 came at Porsche’s annual press conference recently, though it’s still up for interpretation.
Logic dictates that Porsche can only be referring to the GT2 RS. The GT2 RS has a relatively recent history in the 911 lineup, going back to the 993 generation from the 1990s. In this time, the GT2 RS models have earned a reputation as being the most hardcore sports car in a lineup of hard hitters. Traditionally, the GT3 models have stayed naturally aspirated, while the GT2 models go all out with forced induction for those headline power figures.
Case in point, the outgoing generation GT2 RS made 700 horsepower from its twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six engine. Performance, with a 0-60mph in 2.6 seconds, is suitably impressive. The current GT2 RS smashed the Nurburgring lap record for a production car with a 6:43 time.
The 992 generation Porsche 911 has been around since 2018 with a facelift in 2024 seeing the addition of a hybrid-powered 911 GTS model with 532 horsepower. The only hybrid 911 thus far, the GTS is expected to loan its hybrid tech, which sees it do the 0-60mph sprint in 2.9 seconds, to the GT2 RS. As a result the next-gen flagship will easily cross the current 700 horsepower mark.
Expect the current ‘Ring record to tumble when it finally hits the road. As per Porsche, we should expect a launch in the “medium term” which could be as early as next year. Considering the next-gen has a rumored sticker price of $470,000 going by a leaked dealer screenshot, better start saving.
