Thankfully, we now have the chance to witness such a moment with the superyacht Breakthrough (better known as Project 821), which has finally transitioned from concept to reality. Centibillionaire Bill Gates’ groundbreaking hydrogen-powered superyacht, the first of its kind, set out for critical sea trials on October 22. The cutting-edge luxury vessel recently completed trials near IJmuiden, Amsterdam, and is now heading back to Edmiston to hit the market.
This 390-foot marvel, valued at over $645 million, justifies its price tag with a jaw-dropping mix of amenities and eco-friendly features that set it apart as an environmental game-changer. Project 821 is the world’s first fuel-cell-powered superyacht, running on ‘green’ hydrogen gas instead of conventional fuel. This incredible feat involves storing liquid hydrogen cryogenically at an astonishing -423.4 degrees Fahrenheit in precision-engineered double-walled tanks.
Hydrogen requires approximately eight to ten times more storage space than traditional diesel fuel. Sixteen compact fuel cells, holding 92 m² (approximately 4 tonnes) of hydrogen, enable Breakthrough’s tanks to store up to 543 kWh of energy. This is sufficient to power the vessel’s air conditioning and other electrical systems for an entire week. Whether at anchor or navigating at 10 knots while leaving harbors or cruising through protected marine zones, it operates in complete silence, free from the noise and fumes of traditional diesel engines. For transoceanic drives when hydrogen is not available, the 390-foot-long vessel is propelled by 3,200 kW ABB pod drives, which are powered by MTU generators that run on HVO, a second-generation biofuel that reduces harmful emissions by 90 percent. For a trailblazer like Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, this innovation was a natural extension of his passion for climate advocacy and groundbreaking ideas.
Despite its alignment with his ethos, Gates ultimately opted out of taking ownership of the yacht. Yet even without his name attached, the Feadship masterpiece remains nothing short of spectacular. As Boat International notes, Breakthrough is more than just a green powerhouse, it’s a thrilling vessel featuring a semi-submerged Neptune lounge, a cinema, a library, and a 27-foot contraflow pool, perfect for exercise and relaxation. The 7,247 GT superyacht comfortably sleeps 30 guests in 15 rooms.
While its advanced systems tend to steal the limelight, the yacht’s luxurious features are equally captivating. Standouts include an atrium with a spiral staircase wrapped around an elevator, floor-to-ceiling windows with ultra-clear glass, and even a fully equipped hospital.
On a lighter note, the five-deck floating wonderland offers “Nikki Beach”-inspired interiors by RWD, townhouse-style living spread across four levels, cozy coffee nooks, games room (a games room), an expansive library, and even a basketball court.
