In spite of taking delivery 17 months ago, Bill Gates never set foot on his $645 million, hydrogen-powered superyacht, Breakthrough. The Microsoft co-founder has finally sold it to a Canadian billionaire who will now show it to the world at the Monaco Yacht Show.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates may never have stepped aboard the 390-foot flagship, but he laid the foundation for its story. The yacht, billed as the world’s largest hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht, has now been sold, reportedly before Gates himself could tour the creation. In doing so, he set the stage for Canadian billionaire Patrick Dovigi, who arrives at the upcoming Monaco Yacht Show as the proud owner of one of Feadship’s most ambitious masterpieces.

When it comes to Breakthrough, there are three aspects worth obsessing over. First, the energy system; Breakthrough carries a fully integrated hydrogen fuel-cell system that powers the hotel load and, at low speeds, enables emission-free cruising. With its cryogenic liquid hydrogen tanks and advanced battery packs, the yacht delivers what no other vessel of this scale has managed before, the promise of silent, zero-emission yachting.

Second, the interiors. Though still wrapped in secrecy, the design is credited to British studio RWD. Rather than aiming for opulence alone, Breakthrough channels the spirit of a floating villa. At 7,247 GT, she is one of the most significant brokerage deals ever made, but also a reminder that great yachts must feel like homes, not hotels. A relaxed “Nikki Beach” vibe removes any sense of formality. The four-deck “townhouse by the sea” ensures spaces flow with ease, softened by natural textures, leather, marble, and rattan, woven throughout. Every corner is designed to ooze charm rather than overwhelm, giving Breakthrough a warm coastal feel that makes the vast scale approachable.

Launched in May 2024, the vessel has been veiled in mystery. Beyond the basics known to yacht enthusiasts, that she is the world’s first hydrogen fuel-cell superyacht, little has been revealed until now. With Breakthrough now entering the charter market exclusively through Edmiston, a fortunate few will soon experience the genius of her designers and the vision of the original client who dared to commission her.

That brings me to the third incredible element, the lifestyle on board. Breakthrough is filled with amenities that turn time at sea, from a momentary vacation to a way of life. Several cozy coffee nooks and a games lounge bring intimacy, while spaces like the cinema, library, and a fully equipped hospital add both recreation and security. The goliath also establishes a bond between guest and ocean, most aesthetically in the semi-submerged Neptune room at the waterline, where vast windows frame the sea itself. On deck, a multi-use sports court (tennis, padel and pickle ball) dominates the foredeck, which can also double as a helipad, while the stern is anchored by an 8.2-meter infinity pool with a contraflow system, according to Boat International.

Breakthrough, true to her name, is powered by MTU hybrid generators and two ABB Azipod electric drives, achieving a cruising speed of 14 knots and a top speed of 17 knots. Yet it is her energy system that makes her historic. With a battery capacity of roughly 543 kWh, she can operate for a full week in silent, zero-emission mode at anchor or cruise emission-free at up to 10 knots. To put it into perspective, the yacht can generate enough electricity to power 2,600 average U.S. homes for a day, or keep 30 Beverly Hills mansions fully lit, air-conditioned, and spa-ready without emitting a single gram of CO₂. Currently, Breakthrough is cruising off Antibes, France. For those eager to see her in the flesh, yachting enthusiasts will need to head to the Monaco Yacht Show from 24th to 27th September.
