Of all the 224 dazzling superyachts at the Cannes Film Festival, it was Ukraine’s richest man who brought the absolute largest vessel, anchoring a breathtaking 455 foot, half-billion dollar maritime fortress to dwarf every other boat there

At the Cannes Film Festival, one got a practical understanding of how small fish rattle in the bucket, while the big fish swim in silence. Without ever walking the red carpet, the real star of the show was quietly stationed in the background, superyacht Luminance. Owned by Ukraine’s richest man, Rinat Akhmetov, the 455-foot superyacht was the largest vessel spotted in Cannes for the famed film festival this year.

Fresh from 2024, the yacht looked like a million bucks, though it reportedly cost $500 million, with her sleek navy hull and imposing silver six-deck profile. The ultra-secretive luxury vessel, longer than three Olympic-sized swimming pools, is the result of industry heavyweights like Espen Øino and François Zuretti coming together, shared Boat International.

Luminance shone among the nearly 224 yachts in the area from May 12 to 23, flaunting easy-to-spot features like two helipads, a large aft pool, an upper-deck Jacuzzi, and an expansive beach club. The Lürssen mammoth clearly got the memo to arrive in style, and it certainly did not do so in some drab white exterior, but in one that is instantly recognizable, with cascading teak decks and an aura so grand it effortlessly looked like the star of the show. Whether the megayacht was in Cannes specifically for the film festival remains unknown, but its sheer presence during the busiest week on the Riviera was enough to put the spotlight firmly on Luminance.

With a vessel like this as your shelter, it is hardly surprising that those on board would want no part of road traffic, packed streets, or the usual festival chaos, because at this level, privacy is the real luxury. Two helipads and an arsenal of amenities would ensure those aboard would not need to step out for anything, as the billionaire’s fortress offered the very best in a harbor full of floating mansions like Multiverse, Renaissance, Amadea and many more. It is truly refreshing to see that the one thing making heads turn at the Cannes Film Festival was not Hollywood royalty, but a Ukrainian industrial titan’s half-a-billion-dollar asset, born from an empire built on coal, coke, steel, and energy.
