Thanks to Elon Musk’s Starlink service, superyacht owners can get fast and uninterrupted internet service at the remotest locations in the world. While browsing the internet has become more accessible than ever, accessing licensed content onboard is getting trickier by the day because of tightening policies and regulations, especially in the case of live sports. A standard Netflix subscription or a $12/month ESPN+ plan won’t work on vessels thanks to geo-blocking, which restricts access to online content based on a user’s geographical location.
What that means is that legally streaming something like the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson boxing match while cruising in the Mediterranean would be close to impossible. The use of a VPN will only plague the streaming with latency issues. That’s where Mr Cinema comes in with its dedicated commercial content delivery system for superyachts.
Mr Cinema was founded by superyacht entertainment and IT system specialist Mr. Smith, who recognized the need for a content streaming service for superyachts. It started with partnering with major film studios to provide a plug-and-play solution that legally offers film content onboard a vessel. The company has now expanded its services to provide sports content on superyachts in collaboration with Dazn, one of the leading sports entertainment platforms worldwide. Dazn delivers over 200 international markets with live and on-demand NFL, MMA, boxing, European football, and women’s football events.
Initially, two of DAZN’s free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST) channels are available through Mr Cinema, with both companies promising to add many more sports channels in the future. However, this exclusive stream service isn’t cheap. The basic Mr Cinema plan starts at €13,800 (~$14,500) per year, which does not include the sports package. The Platinum + Sports package is priced at €15,000 (about $15800) yearly, which excludes the one-time €10,000 (roughly $10,500) registration fee. Sports content for the first 12 months will be provided without any extra cost along this package.
