After Sindalah, Saudi Crown Prince MBS is now building his country’s first private residential island on the Red Sea. As part of a 92‑island archipelago, residents will be surrounded by one of the world’s largest barrier reefs, home to 2,000 species of marine life

It is green, it is gorgeous, and it is Saudi Arabia’s latest residential-led island development, commissioned by Red Sea Global. Called Laheq Island and designed by Foster + Partners, this first-of-its-kind permanent community spans a whopping 400 hectares and will transform the idyllic locale into a luxury retreat and a low-impact community immersed in nature. At first glance, one is captivated by the striking 800-meter-wide circular structure known as The Ring. Replete with greenery, a central lagoon dotted with white sand beaches, and enveloped by azure blue waters, it immediately sets the tone. The heart of the island is where most of the development is concentrated, while natural ecosystems are carefully preserved around its perimeter.

The design of The Ring is no coincidence; it is an ode of sorts to the circular ecosystem, where recycled water supports the island’s lush vegetation and greenery is thoughtfully integrated to create a living landscape that evolves over time. The vibrant Laheq Island will host residential units, a 115-berth marina, two hotels, a beach club, schools for sailing and watersports, a racket club, an 18-hole golf course with a clubhouse, and a traditional souk, according to Red Sea Global.

The residences are designed to harmonize with the environment, using natural timbers, shaded canopies for sun protection, pergolas, and garden courtyards that invite residents to relax and unwind in this surreal setting. Life at Laheq will be serene when desired and bustling when called for. Residents and guests will enjoy access to a diverse range of premium beach clubs and dining experiences, from laid-back barefoot settings to more refined venues for those moments when dressing up is part of the pleasure.

The island promises the best of local and international cuisine, delivered with exceptional culinary craftsmanship, especially with the addition of not one but two luxury resort hotels. One focuses on holistic wellness, while the other offers luxurious adventures tailored for the most discerning travelers.

The crown jewel, however, is the natural setting itself. Laheq is part of an archipelago of 92 pristine islands, surrounded by one of the world’s largest barrier reefs, home to over 2,000 rare and unique marine species. Laheq Island is set to open in 2028, with residential ownership as the initial focus. Laheq welcomed its first guests in 2023 and now boasts an airport that accommodates a regular schedule of domestic and international flights.
