There are watches that are out of this world, and then there are watches made from something that’s literally out of this world—a meteorite! The Asteroid watch by the eponymous luxury watchmaker Greco-Genève is a truly unique timepiece carved from a meteorite, belonging to the Asteroid belt that fell in Argentina. In true Greco-Geneve style, the model was combined with their signature process of fluorescence to enhance the timepiece and truly allow it to shine like the astronomical element it is.
The watch features a white gold bezel, hieroglyph engravings that pay homage to the movie “Predator,” and extraterrestrial elements like the alien’s watch that boasts similar mysterious inscriptions. The watch is indeed a masterpiece, one that can’t be replicated, which justifies the $1.12 million price tag. However, with exemplary and great-looking watches by luxury watchmakers, the Asteroid Watch pales in comparison in the looks department.
One cannot shake off the prehistoric vibe of the watch, which would make it look better on a mantle than on a man’s wrist. The Instagram account Vertifo1893, which showcases the best of Haute Horlogerie, posted a video on the Asteroid Watch, which received mixed reactions from followers and watch enthusiasts. One user commented, ‘Someone give Fred Flintstone his watch back,’ and another stated, ‘What a waste of an asteroid.’
Not everyone shunned the timepiece, as one follower wrote, ‘This is a flex bro, to say you have space on your wrist is crazy.’ The Asteroid is available on the Greco-Geneve website, where you can casually add a piece of meteorite to your cart like it’s a piece of cake, but it is, in fact, a piece of space!
