Pope Francis’s bespoke Leica M-A camera set to be auctioned for charity and is expected to fetch up to $82,000

A unique Leica camera and lens once gifted to Pope Francis is set to draw global attention as it goes under the hammer at the upcoming Leitz Photographica Auction in Vienna. The Leica M-A, paired with a Noctilux-M 50mm f/1.2 ASPH lens, is no ordinary set. Both the camera and lens bear the exclusive serial number 5000000, a milestone figure reserved by Leica for only the most distinguished individuals. This rare pairing has been estimated to sell for between €60,000 and €70,000 (about $70,000–$82,000), with bidding scheduled to open on October 22 and conclude on November 22 at the Hotel Imperial.

The Leica M-A is finished in silver chrome and features a special white covering with white-painted controls, base plate, and back doors. The craftsmanship is further elevated with engravings that reflect the papal identity of its original owner. The flash cover carries the Keys of Peter, while the back of the top plate bears Pope Francis’ motto, “Miserando atque eligendo,” translated as “lowly but chosen.” These intricate details are highlighted with white, gold, and black paint, while the Noctilux lens is decorated in chrome with gold and white filled engravings. Both the body cap and lens cap are adorned with the Coat of Arms of the Vatican City.

The camera also carries an inscription in Roman numerals marking the year 2024, when Pope Francis received the set as a gift from Leica AG. To complete the presentation, the auction lot includes an exclusive box crafted specifically for this outfit, adding to its rarity and ceremonial presence. Classified as being in condition A, the Leica is essentially mint and has never been used, enhancing its value to collectors.

Leica has a long tradition of reserving round milestone serial numbers for notable personalities, and cameras bearing such markings consistently generate strong results at auction. This Leica M-A is expected to be no exception, particularly given its direct connection to Pope Francis, who passed away in March 2025 at the age of 88. The sale has been designed to honor his legacy, as all proceeds from the hammer price will be directed to charitable causes in keeping with his lifelong dedication to helping those in need.

The auction will also feature other rare highlights, including a Leica I Mod. A Luxus from 1929 and a Leica MP-114 in black paint from 1955, the latter expected to fetch up to $900,000. Yet, among these historic offerings, the Leica M-A that once belonged to Pope Francis stands out as a camera that represents both craftsmanship and compassion.
