A mystery buyer is going viral for reportedly coughing up $4,000 to buy a signed Taylor Swift guitar at a Texas charity auction, only to destroy it seconds later. The guitar literally went under the hammer in this case. Many parents of unyielding Swifties might share that sentiment, having repeatedly listened to Blank Space, Love Story, Lover, etc., for hundreds of hours. However, the reasons behind the elderly man’s actions were strictly political, not a result of maddening repetition.

The guitar in question, now bent and broken, was an old instrument donated by a third party, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity confirming that the Bad Blood singer had indeed autographed it. The auction was held at the Ellis County WildGame Dinner in Waxahachie, just outside of Dallas, on Saturday night, according to Billboard. While the $4,000 all went to charity, supporting the agricultural and rural education of local youth, the winner went home with a broken instrument, albeit of his own making.

The audience and auctioneer seemed to enjoy the act, with the auctioneer humorously telling the white-haired man, “Now take that and hang up that busted thing.” Whether the man’s actions were pre-planned or a spur-of-the-moment decision is unknown. What is clear is that he was no Taylor Swift fan, and the only good thing that came out of the hoopla was the charity.
