This is the watch with which Anant, the son of Asia’s richest man, Mukesh Ambani, wowed Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. And, get this: it’s worth $4.6 million, and it’s not even the second most expensive watch he owns.

Imagine how special a wristwatch has to be to have the fourth richest person on the planet be spellbound. A video recently went viral on the internet in which Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and his philanthropist wife Priscilla Chan — who made their way to India for billionaire heir Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant’s pre-wedding celebration —can be seen admiring Ambani’s ultra-rare Richard Mille watch. “This watch is fantastic,” Chan said, before Zuckerberg commented: “I know, I told him already.” The Facebook co-founder even goes on to say that he’s not much into watches, but Ambani’s attention-grabbing watch on his wrist may have changed his mind. “You know, I never really wanted to get a watch. But after seeing that, I was like, watches are cool,” Zuckerberg added while appreciating Ambani’s watch.

The 28 billionaire heir confirmed to Chan that the watch was a Richard Mille, but he didn’t specify the exact model. His massive watch collection includes several rare Richard Mille watches, including a RMS-10 Tourbillon Koi Fish. However, the watch Anant Ambani – the son of the richest person in Asia, Mukesh Ambani – was spotted wearing is believed to be a Richard Mille RM 56-02 Sapphire.

Limited to just ten examples, the all-sapphire masterpiece was introduced back in 2014. The two main talking points of the stunning horological creations are the unprecedented use of sapphire in the construction of the watch and the innovative cable and pulley system that suspends the movement from the sapphire case.

The tonneau-shaped three-part case of the watch is entirely crafted out of sapphire, offering unprecedented levels of transparency. The case is milled from solid pieces of sapphire, and it takes 40 days of machining with utter precision to create just one unit. In addition to that, the sapphire bridges take an additional 400 hours to make. The other innovation is the cable and pulley system originally debuted with the RM 27-01 Nadal watch.

The baseplate, created from grade 5 titanium, is entirely suspended within the sapphire case by a specially developed single braided cable of only 0.35mm thickness. It is woven within four pulleys placed on the movement’s corners and another 6 pulleys located along the movement’s periphery. The tension of the cable is perfectly controlled by a miniature ratchet at 9 o’clock. An arrow-shaped indicator at 12 o’clock allows for a visual inspection of the cable tension.

The Richard Mille RM 56-02 Sapphire came out a decade ago with a price tag north of $2 million. Since only ten examples of timepieces have been made, they are insanely rare and almost impossible to find in the pre-owned market. However, the current price is estimated to be around $4.6 million. Despite its jaw-dropping price tag, you’ll be surprised that the Richard Mille is nowhere close to being the most expensive watch owned by Anant Ambani.

During the same pre-wedding festivities, he was also spotted wearing a Patek Philippe Grand Complication Sky Moon Tourbillon in 18k gold worth $6.5 million. Claimed to be the second most complicated watch by Patek Philippe, the astonishing timepiece has a grand total of 12 complications.

However, it’s still not the most expensive watch in Anant’s collection. That title goes to his $9 million Patek Philippe Grandmaster Chime Reference 6300G – the most complicated watch ever made by Patek. The timepiece has four spring barrels driving 20 complications, including a grande and petite sonnerie, a minute repeater, an instantaneous perpetual calendar with a four-digit year display, second-time zone, day/night indicator, day/date (on both dials), month, leap-year cycle, four-digit year display, and 24-hour and minute subdial.

Despite being the world’s 4th richest person, Zuckerberg doesn’t believe in spending on watches. In fact, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a single photo of the 39-year-old billionaire wearing a watch of any kind. Although Zuckerberg is seriously into fitness and martial arts, the Meta CEO also doesn’t believe in wearing a smartwatch to track his workouts. On the other hand, Mukesh Ambani, the richest man in Asia with a current net worth of $116 billion, is often spotted wearing an unassuming, discontinued Rolex watch that last retailed for $8500. Will Anant Ambani’s $2 million Richard Mille finally get Zuckerberg interested in luxury watches? Well, who knows?
