Fendi’s latest Peekaboo purse doles out style with a dose of scare

First, we found ourselves fawning over Fendi’s bag bugs, buggies-teaser included. Now we have our fashion-loving selves gushing over the Italian label’s latest Peekaboo handbag (menacing mouth not included). The perfect accompaniment to the cutesy accessories, the bag had us at ‘python.’ Until we unraveled its black leather, that is.

Who could’ve guessed that when an haute fashion abode launches yet another one of its famed purses, what is a simple side compartment, would hide a pair of glaring yellow eyes within! Or that the seemingly stylish zip housed a blood-red mouth? “I like that monster very much, with his two eyes. That was my idea,” says Silvia Venturini Fendi, creative director, Fendi accessories. The designer, however, does admit to having been influenced by her daughter’s designs on jewelry. It is, after all, Delfina Delettrez who is renowned for harboring a penchant for eye motifs.

With a name that fools and scares to equal luxurious measure, Fendi Bag Bug Peekaboo is available from FENDI, 191 Sloane Street, London SW1, and from the FENDI Bag Bug pop-up shop in Harrods for $6,000. So, scare or be square! “The eyes are today what the skulls were a few years ago and what the smile was in the 1990s. They are symbols that really relate to a generation. Now, this is the eye moment. I don’t know why. They say that the eye is protection, which makes it a good symbol. And I think it will continue for quite a while.”
