Pretty in blue, Barbie gets a wedding gown from her fashion godfather, Oscar de la Renta

There was probably a time sometime in Barbie’s life when little girls used to play with her. Before the world of fashion consumed her and turned her into an off-the-ramp model and every designer’s dream muse. History is getting repeated, in a very special way now, thanks to a new collaboration between Barbie’s creators Mattel and bridal couture guru Oscar de la Renta. Incidentally, he was the first designer to enter Barbie’s life, in 1985. However, this time, the fashion brand has tailored a beautiful wedding gown making Barbie an enchanting and surreal princess.

She has waited a long while, since her birth in 1959, and has led an infamous life of glamour, gossip and fanfare. So when someone finally sits down to create her a wedding dress, it had to be done with style, by someone who knew her well. To mark its exclusiveness as a collector’s item, only 10,000 of these will be sold worldwide. The collectible Something Blue Barbie doll is dressed in a trumpet-shaped ivory gown using chiffon and tulle. This design was chosen from la Renta’s 2014 runway collection. The ensemble is accessorised with dazzling jewellery, a feminine bouquet, gold-accented pumps and a Hollywood-inspired chignon. The doll comes encased in a blue laser cut lace-sleeved white box which opens into a background of white roses.
