$20,000 for the Currency artwork featuring… currency

Modern art never fails to amuse. Or maybe it is so cliché a term that artists force themselves to pick up the first thing they lay their eyes on and tie it with a million-dollar price tag and label it modern art. A Sydney-based artist Denis Beaubois’s work ‘Currency’ (how creative), was snapped up at the Deutscher and Hackett’s auction house in Melbourne for $21,350. This is the artwork – a stack of $100 bills totaling $20,000 and is described as a conceptual art project that explores the tension between the economic value of the material against the cultural value of the art object’. Right. Now, who is the winner here, and who the sucker?
