There’s no bigger flex than owning the Batmobile, even if your flex tops out at 30mph. This Batmobile, created for Warner Bros, comes with its certificate of authenticity, even if it doesn’t quite have the firepower to take you over the speed limit on most roads.
Created for the 1989 Batman film, this Batmobile is up for sale with Mecum Auctions. A similar example, actually driven by Michael Keaton playing Batman in the movie, was sold recently for upwards of $1.5 million. Expect pricing lower than that since this one hasn’t been featured on the silver screen.
This particular Batmobile wears serial number 1 and was likely produced as an exhibition vehicle by Hollywood Productions, specialists in movie cars. Based on an extended Chevrolet Impala chassis with a Chevy 350 small block V8 engine, it’s got the ingredients to be a true hot rod.
Though this Batmobile is a runner, designed to be able to be driven to the set and off it, it’s presumably been limited in the gearbox department. Its automatic gearbox tops out at 30mph, so though it looks like one of the fastest movie cars out there, it’s more show than go.
However, it still looks authentic from the tip of its authentic Harrier jet turbine nose to the menacing fins at the rear. It even packs a working flamethrower to simulate afterburners.
The over-20-foot-long Batmobile runs on custom wheels and Mickey Thompson drag tires with grooves, which is one part of what makes it “street legal”. The sliding jet fighter canopy does work and features windshield wipers. This Batmobile even has working headlights and taillights. This could just be the ultimate car for your friendly Neighbourhood Watch volunteer to really keep criminals on their feet.
