James Bond meets The Jetsons—this $300,000 electric car can actually fly over traffic. Packed with propellers under the bonnet and boot, it even flew over another car on a public road in California.

Imagine cruising down the road, stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic, when suddenly, your car lifts off and soars over the congestion like something out of The Jetsons. That future is closer than ever, thanks to Alef Aeronautics. The California-based company just made history by releasing footage of its Model Zero prototype—an electric car that not only drives but also takes off vertically and flies over traffic.

This isn’t just another futuristic concept destined for the cutting room floor. Alef’s flying car has been in development since 2015, and now, the world is getting a glimpse of what could soon revolutionize personal transportation. Unlike traditional eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing vehicles), which function more like drones or small helicopters, Alef’s creation is a fully functional automobile on the ground. This means you can drive it around like a normal car and, when needed, take off into the air—no runway required.

At first glance, the Model Zero looks like a sleek, modern roadster. But hidden beneath its stylish exterior is a cutting-edge propulsion system that makes vertical takeoff possible. Using distributed electric propulsion and a unique mesh-covered propeller system, the car lifts effortlessly into the sky, bypassing obstacles that would leave conventional cars at a standstill. The recent test, conducted on a closed road for safety, showed the vehicle smoothly transitioning from driving to flying, proving that the concept is more than just a wild idea.

The company’s first commercial model, the Alef Model A, is expected to hit the market soon with a price tag of around $300,000. This futuristic two-seater will offer a driving range of 200 miles and a flying range of 110 miles, making it an ideal solution for urban commuters tired of sitting in traffic. The vehicle will also come equipped with high-tech safety features, including an obstacle detection system, glide landing capability, and even a ballistic parachute—because, let’s face it, no one wants to risk a rough landing in midair.

However, there’s one catch—speed. While the Model A is groundbreaking in its ability to fly, it won’t be breaking any land-speed records. With a top speed of just 25 mph on the road, this isn’t the car you’ll be taking on the Autobahn. But for those willing to sacrifice speed for the ultimate flexibility of both driving and flying, it’s a game-changer.

Looking ahead, Alef has even bigger plans. By 2035, the company hopes to launch the Model Z, a four-person sedan capable of flying 200 miles and driving 400 miles. If successful, this could be the moment when flying cars finally become a mainstream reality, changing the way we move through our cities forever. For now, we can only dream—but with Alef pushing the boundaries, those dreams might take flight sooner than we think.
