Girard-Perregaux’s new Laureato Absolute Chronograph 8Tech is a stealthy monochromatic timepiece crafted using a unique carbon composite material

Ever since Girard-Perregaux introduced the modern Laureato Absolute collection in 2019, the Swiss luxury watchmaker has repeatedly experimented with cutting-edge materials to craft new timepieces. For 2023, Girard-Perregaux has expanded the line-up with a new watch that is made of a unique carbon alloy and features a stealthy yet attractive monochromatic look. Announced for this year’s Geneva Watch Days fair, the latest carbon-clad chronograph is called the Girard-Perregaux Laureato Absolute 8Tech. The highlight of the watch is its 44mm octagonal case which is crafted from a carbon-titanium composite material created using a groundbreaking manufacturing technique called 8T.

According to the Swiss watchmaker, the high-tech case material of made of unidirectional, non-braided, and pre-impregnated carbon fiber, which is combined with lightweight titanium powder to form extremely thin layers. These ultra-thin layers measuring just 0.05mm in thickness are superimposed upon one another to form stacks that are then milled into different shapes. The resulting material looks nothing like carbon fiber; instead, the wavy pattern shimmering through gives it a unique appearance.

Complementing the unique case execution is the minimalist grey dial that features a sandwich-type construction. The upper surface is sandblasted and gets a gradient grey finish, while the lower layer is formed of Grade 5 titanium. The bottom layer is partially revealed through a series of apertures on the upper surface. Furthermore, the dial gets minimal text, legible subdials, and a date display located between 4 and 5 o’clock. The Laureato Absolute 8Tech is powered by the brand’s GP03300-1058 automatic movement that offers a 46-hour power reserve and can be seen through the smoked sapphire crystal caseback.
