While Rolex is always shown in movies as a symbol of wealth, in X-Men Dark Phoenix, when Professor X is meeting Magneto, a mutant who can generate magnetic fields, he wears a Rolex Milgauss, a watch that was specially developed to be resistant to magnetic interference.

Dark Phoenix, released in 2019, came as a disappointment to longtime fans of the X-Men franchise. As a result, the movie struggled at the box office, grossing significantly less than its predecessors. While the film’s script came under much criticism, the writers hid an exciting Easter egg in the scene where Magneto and Professor X make peace at Rue de la Paix (Peace Street) in France. It’s got to do with the Rolex on Charles’ wrist, and only watch nerds will notice and understand the context of this Easter egg. But don’t worry, we’re here to explain!

Rolex has always been a symbol of success and wealth in movies, mimicking the real world. Be it the early James Bond films or Matthew McConaughey’s character, Mark Hanna, in The Wolf of Wall Street, who wears a Datejust, Rolex watches have made numerous memorable appearances in films, often symbolizing luxury, success, and sophistication.

The X-Mansion which is home to Charles Xavier.

Professor Charles Xavier, aka Professor X, is depicted as a wealthy individual whose financial resources come from his family’s fortune and the lucrative real estate holdings associated with the X-Mansion. However, the Rolex worn by Charles in Dark Phoenix has a very different purpose than symbolizing wealth.

You might notice that Professor X wears the specific watch, a Rolex Milgauss, only in this scene with Magneto, and there’s a very good reason behind it. You see, Magneto is one of the most powerful mutants in the franchise who is capable of generating and manipulating all forms of magnetism. However, the Rolex Milgauss is a watch with a very special capability – it can withstand magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. What that means is that Charles intended to wear a watch that has protection against Magneto’s powers. Pretty interesting, right?

Rolex Milgauss – a watch demanded by scientists

Launched in 1956, Rolex Milgauss was designed for scientists and engineers, particularly those working in environments with strong magnetic fields. The precision of an ordinary mechanical watch can be affected by a magnetic field of 50 to 100 gauss. Scientists exposed to much higher magnetic fields during their work required something better. As a result, the Swiss watch brand created the Milgauss, capable of withstanding magnetic fields of up to 1,000 gauss. The watch features a ferromagnetic shield that protects its movement from magnetic interference, ensuring accurate timekeeping even in challenging conditions. It is worn by scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva.
