A millionaire’s rare license plate could sell for $1.5 million at auction, making it worth more than triple the price of the Ferrari 812 GTS it was last seen on

A very short vanity plate could soon become the most expensive license plate ever sold in the United Kingdom. The one-of-a-kind ‘1F’ registration is expected to fetch between $1 million and $1.5 million at auction through RM Sotheby’s, doubling the current UK record. The plate was first registered in 1957 in Essex and has been fitted to several high-end cars over the decades. Most recently, it was spotted on a Ferrari 812 GTS, itself a thoroughbred with a starting price around $440,000. This means the license plate itself was worth more than double the supercar it adorned.

In the UK, personalized number plates have evolved from just registration numbers into status symbols. Shorter, simpler registrations tend to command the highest prices, which is why single letter and number combinations are the holy grail of British plates. The legendary Formula 1 commentator Murray Walker once quipped that “if” is a very long word in Formula 1, adding that the word is actually F1 spelled backwards. Clever wordplay like this has only enhanced the mystique surrounding plates like the ‘1F’ in question.

Currently, the plate ‘JB 1′, which sold for roughly $760,000 in 2024, holds the record for the most expensive registration in the UK. Before that, ’25 O’ held the crown after selling for $647,000 in 2014. If ‘1F’ reaches the higher end of its estimate, it will obliterate these records and cement its place in history, at least in the UK. A Saudi businessman is already the holder of the most expensive vanity plate in history, with a price tag of $14 million for the single digit ‘1’.

Similarly, the ‘1F’ plate represents more than just vanity. It’s an investment opportunity, with auctioneers calling it a once-in-a-lifetime chance for collectors to give their supercar an instant identity boost. When the hammer falls in November, we’ll discover whether this two-character combination can become the new king of registration plates, proving that sometimes the smallest things carry the biggest price tags, and the most significance.
