Austrian toolmaker Haidlmair found an entertaining way to celebrate its biggest-ever Amazon contract, but the party’s most memorable guest was not quite who everyone thought he was. Last month, a professional Jeff Bezos impersonator arrived by helicopter at a company celebration in Micheldorf, Upper Austria, wearing a dark suit, aviator-style glasses, and the Amazon founder’s familiar shaved-head-and-beard look. Walking beside him were three masked, heavily armed Austrian police officers who were very much the real thing. The result was an extraordinary piece of corporate theater in which the billionaire was fake, but his security detail was genuine.
The officers were members of the Schnelle Interventionsgruppe, or SIG, of Upper Austria, a special unit based in Linz, and they apparently knew perfectly well that they were escorting an impersonator. According to Der Standard, the matter is now subject to an internal police investigation focusing on how the deployment was arranged, questions of jurisdiction and responsibility, and who should ultimately pay for the officers’ presence at the private event. The unusual arrangement has also raised questions because the SIG is intended for particularly dangerous situations and reportedly has no personal-protection training. In other words, this was less a case of confusing the world’s third-richest man with his double and more a case of Austrian police helping make the joke unusually convincing.
Amazon’s biggest order gets a billionaire-sized entrance
The party was held in a former Kiefel factory hall in Micheldorf, in the Kirchdorf district, where Haidlmair was celebrating the completion of its biggest-ever Amazon order. It involved around 170 injection molds completed in roughly six months using more than 650,000 components and 2,800 metric tons of steel. The molds will produce standardized containers for Amazon logistics centers in the United States, Mexico and Canada, with initial use expected in 2027 and deliveries beginning in 2028. Amazon representative Rick Spooner attended the celebration, while Haidlmair said the demanding schedule required overtime, weekend work and support from European partners.
The party itself was hardly a quiet factory gathering. Guests had access to helicopter sightseeing flights, freestyle motocross demonstrations, live music from village brass bands from Nußbach and Waldneukirchen, the Austrian party band Mountain Crew, bull riding, roast suckling pig and grilled specialties. The helicopter carrying the Bezos double therefore fitted neatly into an afternoon that already had plenty of aviation and spectacle. The impersonator was Cagdas Halicilar, a professional Bezos lookalike from Leimen, Germany, and a former electrician who has turned his resemblance to the Amazon founder into a second career. His own social-media description of the appearance left little ambiguity, referring to arriving “from the helicopter into the hall” with Mario Haidlmair, his bodyguards, and SIG Upper Austria.
The fake billionaire’s very real security detail
The police involvement reportedly began when Haidlmair personally contacted Linz police chief Klaus Hübner, whom he has known for years. According to the reports, they both once lived in the same town. Haidlmair said Hübner initially found the request unusual but later viewed the gathering as an opportunity to promote police work and support recruitment and employer branding. Hübner has not publicly commented on that account, while Haidlmair said the idea for the appearance originated with an employee rather than Amazon or Bezos. The company also reportedly offered from the outset to cover the police costs, although Haidlmair said no invoice had arrived when the story emerged.
Der Standard reported that the officers may have been permitted to record the assignment as overtime, including hazard pay, although police have not confirmed those payment details. The arrangement is now being examined through an internal service-law review involving the parties connected to the operation, and Austria’s Federal Bureau of Anti-Corruption, known as the BAK, has also been notified. At the time of publication, the public prosecutor’s offices in Linz and Steyr said they had not received a formal complaint, although questions about possible misuse of office were being raised. Austria’s Green Party has also announced a parliamentary inquiry seeking to establish who authorized the deployment, the basis for the decision and who will ultimately bear the cost.
The questions become more striking when the nature of Austrian police protection is considered. Personal protection is normally handled by state-protection authorities and, when necessary, the Cobra special operations unit, while the SIG is an intervention force intended for dangerous situations rather than celebrity appearances. The local police station in Kirchdorf was apparently not involved, despite the event taking place in its district, and no published account has identified a specific threat that would have required three masked, heavily armed officers to accompany Halicilar. Even the real Jeff Bezos would not ordinarily receive this particular kind of Austrian police escort, with private security being the more conventional arrangement for a visiting billionaire. Haidlmair may have wanted to give its Amazon celebration a suitably Bezos-sized finale, but the unusual choice of bodyguards has ensured that the party’s biggest talking point came not from the molds, the helicopter or the impersonator, but from three very real police officers.
