Koru is a mammoth, spanning 416 feet, with triple masts soaring to 230 feet. Yet before it is a symbol of size, stature, and price, a whopping $500 million, it is first and foremost a love boat. It has been the stage for Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez’s romantic saga. The power couple got engaged aboard and celebrated their union on the Oceanco beauty. I had hoped they would even tie the knot on the luxury vessel, but they saved that fantasy for the honeymoon that followed.
They are now reportedly offering this floating paradise to their friend Katy Perry and her latest beau, Justin Trudeau. The couple, who have been stealing the limelight, will find solace on one of the world’s largest sailing yachts, far from prying eyes.
It was the new Mrs. Bezos who played cupid for her BFF, Perry, who also accompanied her to space earlier this year. After Sánchez introduced the pair, the first lady of Koru is gifting them some quality time aboard the yacht, a floating fortress far from lenses. According to Yahoo News, Sánchez joked, “I’ve gone from launching rockets to launching romances!”
The timing works beautifully for Perry and Trudeau, who made a highly public hand-in-hand appearance in Paris, then surfaced on a yacht in Santa Barbara. Privacy was not part of those outings, but it is a given with the Amazon founder’s pleasure craft, which is also trailed by the $75 million helicopter-carrying support vessel Abeona.
Koru is an immensely capable yacht with transoceanic range, between roughly 5,000 nautical miles at economical speed and up to about 7,000 nautical miles when run slowly and efficiently under power. Even if the couple wishes to push far over the horizon, Koru’s ocean-crossing range offers weeks of autonomy between ports.
Abeona shadows Koru, carrying the helicopter, large tenders, toys, and specialist staff. The newly in love couple can be flown or tendered in via Abeona, allowing Koru to remain anchored offshore with minimal eyes and cameras on their every move. Katy can rely on Abeona’s D14 helideck for yacht-to-shore shuttles, instead of leaping off the yacht like she did with former adventurous partner Orlando Bloom the last time she was spotted on the pleasure craft.
Whether the highly in demand couple takes Mrs. Bezos’s offer is not known. For now, the mothership Koru and the support yacht Abeona are getting their time off at La Ciotat. Perhaps they will be put to use by Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau after all, fresh and primed for a new romance on deck this time.
