Before her Met Gala moment, Kim Kardashian had already turned a Broadway sidewalk into a fashion spectacle. Kardashian attended the Broadway play The Fear of 13 with Tessa Thompson and Adrien Brody in an Asian-inspired Dior look by John Galliano. Yet the real showstopper was not the vintage dress, or even the play itself, but the shimmering object in her hand, the Hermès Kellymorphose Sac Bijou Chaîne.

Ultra-rare and deserving of a pedestal of its own, this sterling silver masterpiece is less a handbag and more hand-held sculpture. Designed by Pierre Hardy, the creative director of Hermès Jewelry, the Kellymorphose collection was created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of his time with the maison. The collection reimagines the iconic Kelly silhouette through precious materials and jewelry craftsmanship, shrinking one of fashion’s most recognizable bags into a dazzling object barely four inches wide. Rather amusingly, Kardashian is famous for wearing heels larger than the bag itself.

Crafted entirely from 925 sterling silver, the tiny Kelly features the complex “Sac Bijou” construction. Its surface is made from a mesh of silver Chaîne d’Ancre links, which, despite being metal, gives the accessory a surprisingly fluid, fabric-like appearance. Unlike most minaudières that merely imitate handbags, this one replicates nearly every structural detail of a full-sized Kelly.

The miniature does open with the classic Kelly turn-lock mechanism, but functionality is almost beside the point. You may fit a lipstick inside, but not much else. Everything from the touret lock and sanglons (the two straps found on a Kelly) to the side gussets and top handle has been recreated in solid silver metal. Measuring roughly 4.3 x 2.8 x 1.4 inches, the diminutive piece weighs around 440 grams despite carrying little more than status, prestige, and unmatched craftsmanship.

What makes the Sac Bijou fascinating beyond craftsmanship is how it alters the original philosophy of the Kelly bag. Traditional Hermès bags were created to carry a woman’s entire world with elegance and practicality. The Kellymorphose Sac Bijou Chaîne, however, abandons practicality almost entirely in favor of fashion and flamboyance. Originally retailed for approximately $45,000 to $60,000, the Sac Bijou has become one of the most difficult Hermès creations to acquire. On the secondary market, lucky few may find it for over $100,000. According to Sotheby’s, a similar sterling silver Kellymorphose sold in Hong Kong in 2023 for roughly $115,600.
Part of the reason collectors obsess over it is because production numbers are believed to be extremely limited, with some collectors claiming only a handful are made each year. Kim looked resplendent with Hermès and Dior working their magic as the billionaire worth $1.8 billion, joined the producing team of The Fear of 13 last month, reported Gala. Still it was the billionaire’s fabulous but futile accessory that took the bow!
