Designer Janie Bryant may have tasted fame thanks to her period appropriate (and super stylish!) costumes for the T.V. show Mad Men, but as the show comes to a close we discover that her true calling may be in designing bridal wear! Bryant is creating a custom wedding gown for her close friend, fashion publicist Shana Honeyman who will tie the knot this May in Palm Springs.
Characterized by details like a mermaid style silhouette, an open neckline and a fitted waist, the dream dress will also include a dramatic cape (as pictured in the sketch). “A cape is very modern, yet it is something that harkens back to the past as well,” said Bryant. The cape will be made from embellished lace, a stylish complement to the duchesse satin gown.
This isn’t the first time Bryant has shown an interest in bridal wear. “When I was in design school that was my senior project. I designed a wedding gown and all the bridesmaid dresses. That’s what I really wanted to do when I got out of design school. I wanted to do bridal,” the designer muses. She has since created wedding gowns for her sister and her agent but her one regret is that she couldn’t design her own wedding dress because of a busy schedule. “When my husband Peter and I got married, I was in production of Mad Men so I wanted the planning to involve minimal stress. But when I look back on it, I really wish I had the time to design my own wedding dress because I know exactly the gown it would be. If I could, I would walk around in a wedding gown every day!” she explained.
