In collaboration with DMG Mori and Solidcam, tuner Jean Pierre Kraemer has built what is likely the world’s most expensive wheel, a titanium masterpiece milled entirely from solid metal.

The project began with a 307-kilogram (about 675 pounds) block of titanium, the same alloy often used in jet fighters and spacecraft. According to Auto Bild, the machining process reduces this massive billet to around 15 kilograms (33 lbs.) for a single finished rim. Other German reports put the final weight between 15 and 18 kilograms, meaning more than 95% of the original material becomes chips. It demands low feed rates, high spindle power, and constant coolant flow.

Tool wear adds a five-figure expense since cutters degrade quickly under titanium’s heat. Programming, simulation, and verification across engineering teams represent yet another five-figure investment. Altogether, the project rivals the cost structure of aerospace manufacturing.


To illustrate the scale, the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II program consumes nearly 15 metric tons of titanium per aircraft due to high “buy-to-fly” ratios, the same principle seen here. In both cases, vast quantities of material are sacrificed for the sake of precision and strength.
