The real deal. In today’s world, these words mean very little, and proof lies in AheadForm’s reportedly $150,000 Origin F1, a physical robot designed for face-to-face interaction with AI. This desktop ultra-bionic humanoid can mimic the facial expressions, eye movements and speech of a human to a T, to the point of bewilderment over how a robot manages it so seamlessly. Some credit also goes to its 3D-reconstructed, high-precision biomimetic skin. There are two versions of the Origin F1 robot, “black,” a female humanoid with black hair, and “white,” a female humanoid with light-blonde hair. But the possibilities could be endless in the future, potentially allowing people to customize their robot to look like the girl of their dreams.
The roots of this lifelike technology stretch back to Columbia University, where AheadForm founder Yuhang Hu developed the underlying facial-robotics technology while completing his doctorate at the university’s Creative Machines Lab. With his tech gift to the world, the internet could not contain its excitement. Commenting on a video of the robot, one viewer said, “My father saved his money for a house; I am saving mine for my future robot dream girl.” Another added, “We’ll be able to have a robot girlfriend that’s way out of our league,” shared Dailymail.
Do keep in mind, the robotic girlfriend will come with a pretty head, face and neck attached to an exposed mechanical pedestal, but no functional arms or legs. She won’t cook, clean or do anything Rosie did in The Jetsons, except perhaps converse with the same wit and care. Origin F1 has 26 degrees of freedom across its head, eyes and facial mechanism, allowing the robot to blink with varying timing and cadence, direct its gaze and maintain eye contact, move its eyes independently of its head, nod, tilt and reposition its head, and produce small movements around its mouth, cheeks and brows.
As for communication, face recognition will allow the robot to identify you, while speech recognition will let it listen and respond to your voice. It will be capable of natural dialogue and can also provide basic emotional feedback. AheadForm was founded only in 2024, and its website does not display a retail price, although rumor mills are abuzz with $150,000. The best way to get your hands on the robot is perhaps to fill out its inquiry form, which asks buyers to specify their budget, required quantity, intended application and delivery country.
By comparison, Tesla’s much-hyped Optimus still appears relatively clunky in motion, remains focused primarily on factory work and has faced repeated delays on its path to large-scale deployment. Despite all the talk of robot girlfriends, Origin F1’s most realistic roles are not inside private homes; it is better suited to luxury boutiques, hotels, museums, showrooms, theme parks, exhibitions and entertainment venues.
